To choose our own friends wisely in order to let us learn from our Prophet Muhammad SAW. He taught us that we are on the religion of our friends. We are on this life style of our friends. And I think that this advice the Prophet Muhammad SAW gave us is so put in our times because many of us choose our friends like we choose you know basically cereal at the grocery store with really not much choice just whatever looks appealing at the time. But imagine that you know the person who wants to get married when you're looking for the right wife or husband, you are going to start inquiring about this person's background, you want to know their family, religion, wealth, everything about them. And this person who you know you're gonna be spending the rest of your life with. To be honest, it's really important to start choosing friends like we choose our spouses, especially for this zaman. Your friend should be A or A+ only, not in academic matters only but this one is highlighting the matter of religion you know because if you're with somebody who is not going to make you a better person or remind you about akhirah. Than that person unfortunately is not a friend you should be taking or be with, it's not because we want to avoid them only but we need to really look at the meaning of itself. Avoiding them is to fear Allah only. We need to learn to have friends who don't wanna just be friends in this dunya, but they want to be your next doors neighbors in Jannatul Firdaus. When I started to learn about this, I feel so grateful that Islam adalah agama yang sangat indah, bahkan hal-hal kecil seperti ini sangat diperhatikan karena dengan siapa kita berteman, kita dapat berkaca sendiri tentang siapa diri kita. Even choosing friends, it gives us benefit not only in this dunya but in the hereafter. Anyway, I hope it doesn't sounds like we are very choosy or like being so arrogant or whatever but I believe in His rules. We had to cut a lot people off and we really have to sometimes to figure out what is our priority? Start to ask yourself! Is it your life is only to enjoy this life? Why Allah created you? Why are you on this earth? How long you are you gonna be here for? And you could have time to mess around with people who don't have your priority in mind. And make sure the people you're surrounding yourselves are people who are going to remind you of Allah SWT in good times and bad times. And those people will help you to get ready for the next life, akhirah. Ultimately, these people who you're with are going to shape your character as a muslim and your identity.
Let us tadabbur Surah Al An'am verse 70;
وَذَرِ الَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُوا دِينَهُمْ لَعِبًا وَلَهْوًا وَغَرَّتْهُمُ الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا ۚ وَذَكِّرْ بِهِ أَنْ تُبْسَلَ نَفْسٌ بِمَا كَسَبَتْ لَيْسَ لَهَا مِنْ دُونِ اللَّهِ وَلِيٌّ وَلَا شَفِيعٌ وَإِنْ تَعْدِلْ كُلَّ عَدْلٍ لَا يُؤْخَذْ مِنْهَا ۗ أُولَٰئِكَ الَّذِينَ أُبْسِلُوا بِمَا كَسَبُوا ۖ لَهُمْ شَرَابٌ مِنْ حَمِيمٍ وَعَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْفُرُونَ
Leave alone those to whom their religion is no more than a useless plaything and who are deceived by the lure of the worldly life. Remind them of Our revelation so that a soul will not bring about its own destruction because of its deeds. No one besides God will be its guardian or intercessor, nor will any kind of ransom be accepted from it. Those who have entangled themselves in their evil deeds will drink boiling water and live in painful torment for their hiding the Truth.
